Chapter 9
I SLEPT SURPRISINGLY WELL at the new place. The fresh air, the smell of mown grass, the lack of so many people and cars passing by outside the windows â it all created an unusual feeling of peace and quiet.
I suspected that the reason for my sound sleep wasnât the splendid atmosphere of the new house, but rather my chronic exhaustion from my harsh workouts. After those, my weakened body collapsed into an abyss of serene rest. All the better that Theophane was busy with errands and housework, so he didnât summon me to do an evening workout.
The next morning, he came into my new room with a glass of water in his hand and an incredibly nasty smile on his face.
What made me think that? Because Iâd seen all this before with my own eyes. I suspected that at first heâd had the vilest plans for my wake-up call, but once he came into the room he stumbled upon me staring at him attentively. By that time I was already awake and had even managed to change into my workout clothes.
âAh, youâre already up? Good morning,â he said, his smile fading, then took a big gulp of water from the glass â probably so I wouldnât suspect his ghastly hidden intentions. âThen letâs go, time for our workout.â
The morning workout was as I expected â that is to say, very difficult. A long run around the residential area (which was surprisingly big), then a workout at the local stadium â where there was a pretty big area with horizontal bars â then some tough strength training, meditation, and tech practice, and then we went home.
Maybe I was starting to get used to working so hard, or maybe the key was that Iâd finally gotten a proper full night of sleep, but I felt much better than I had during the past workouts and even ran home cheerfully.
I earned a few approving glances from Theophane for that in moments when he thought I wasnât looking.
The return home was fairly interesting. The neighborhood was already awake. One person was feeding livestock, another was leading cows to the pasture, another was simply standing and looking at the street curiously to see what was going on there. All of them were united in one way: they were staring at us with curiosity.
We had a big surprise waiting for us at home â Marissa the landlady was in the kitchen.
Theophane frowned and seemed to want to get angry at her willfulness â weâd paid for the lease honestly, after all, and it was logical to assume that we didnât want to see outsiders in here. However, when he sniffed the air, he shut his mouth.
âIâm just here making you a little something to eat,â said Marissa in a sweet voice. âWith two boys in the house, how will you ever cook yourselves proper meals? So go get changed and have a seat at the table.â
I took a quick shower, changed, returned to the divine-smelling kitchen, and found an interesting scene there.
